Students Compete in Annual English Festival

Several Mars Area Middle School students participated in the 2019 Youngstown State University English Festival, held April 11-12.

Seventh-grader Lillian Wolf earned third place in the Limericks Contest. Eighth-grader Danielle Snyman took sixth place; eighth-grader Naiya Patel, ninth place; and seventh-grader Kaden Gratton, an honorable mention in the Impromptu Writing Contest.

Eighth-grader Frances Huffman received and honorable mention in the Journalism Contest. In the Writing Games Contest, the team that included eighth-grader Madeline Wolf and seventh-grader Cecelia Crowley earned of honorable mention.

In the Not-So-Trivial Pursuit Contest, eighth-grader Madeline Wolf and seventh-grader Declan Abbey were members of the second place team and seventh-grader Addison Girdwood was a member of third place team.

Other participants were eighth-graders Piper Empey, Ava Lockette, Zachary Long, Megan McSwain, Madelyn Ostapchenko, Willow Starkey, Jeremy Stevenson and Molly Suppo; and seventh-graders Declan Abbey, Brooke Franklin, Adam Julian, Kylie Lavelle, Emma MacDonald and Brian Yurek.

The annual event, open to students in Grades 7-12, welcomes thousands of students from schools in Butler, Mercer and Lawrence counties as well as several Ohio counties and is meant to promote and cultivate reading and writing.
