Mars Area Middle School eighth-graders Gwen Howell and Max Wickland were awarded American Legion certificates at the school’s annual Eighth Grade Recognition Ceremony on June 4.

The award is presented to one eighth grade boy and girl who serve as role models in the areas of integrity, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service.

Teachers nominate students for the recognition. Other nominees included eighth-graders Shane Cannon, Effie Frank, Lindsey Gourash, Deven Koch, Noah Nesselroad, Mia Schterengarts, Gracyn Thatcher, Meredith Wawrzynski and Cole Winstead.
