District Utilizing Flexible Instruction Days

As Mars Area School District had its first Snow Day of the 2019-2020 School Year on Feb. 7 and winter weather is upon us, the District would like to remind parents that the next five (5) Snow Days, if any are needed, will be considered Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs).

Earlier this school year, the District announced that it would utilize FIDs, which may be used in place of a school day that has been cancelled because of inclement weather or another emergency situation. On a FID, students will complete learning activities and assignments provided by their teachers at home on the day that otherwise would have been cancelled. Students will receive learning activities and assignments for each subject that would have originally taken place during a regular school day.

Students and parents/guardians will be informed of a FID through the District’s mass notification system in the same way that school closings and delays are announced. Notifications will be distributed via phone and e-mail and will be posted on the District’s website,

Teachers are designing learning activities and assignments that will be posted to a “FID” folder on their individual Schoology pages. And, teachers will be available to answer questions via e-mail and Schoology during the school day on all Flexible Instruction Days.

On a FID, students will be expected to complete lessons for all classes that are typically scheduled for that day, including all special area classes such as health, art, music, library, etc. Any students with IEPs will receive modified or adapted assignments. Teachers will provide paper copies of all lessons and assignments to any students who do not have access to the Internet, either prior to the FID on the next regular school day.

If a student cannot access the Internet or the paper copies of the learning activities, he/she will have five (5) school days to complete the assignments. Any student who fails to complete their FID assignment within five (5) school days will receive a zero grade and will be marked as absent.

Any specific questions or concerns may be directed to the Building Principal in your child's school. For details, visit
