Lesson Offers Look at Pennsylvania Animals

Eighth-graders in Amanda Stavish and Michelle Weston’s class at Mars Area Middle School are learning about Pennsylvania mammals and what makes them an important part of the urban forest ecosystem.

The program, led by Joe Stavish, Tree Pittsburgh director of education, discussed the animals that live in the state including bear, beavers, foxes, possum, raccoons, skunks, and squirrels. The students then worked together to identify animals by examining their tracks, fur/hair, skulls/teeth, and scat.
