Eighth-graders in Ben Kissel’s mathematics classes at Mars Area Middle School are using cardboard to design buildings and other structures as part of a Geometry Architecture Project.

The students, using famous buildings, landmarks and more as inspiration, are piecing together their structures, on which they are required to use at least two geometric shapes and to label all points, segments, planes and angles. The students also need to calculate the midpoint and distance as well as the perimeter and area of each shape.

The eighth-graders’ final projects must demonstrate a creative use of geometry. The students will earn points for creativity and complexity (angled walls, bridges, arches, etc.) and accuracy. For more information, call (724) 625-3145.
